Chapter 3 : Anatomy of a Book

Chapter 3 focused on the anatomy of a book from chroniclebooks.com and had a nice diagram that introduced me to vocabulary I had never heard of before!  Here a some of the key terms that are important for every librarian to know :
  • Endpapers - The two pieces of paper that are at the front and back of every book.  They usually go along with the design of the book.
  • Casewrap - This is what is under the cover of a book.  It sort of wraps the book up like a present.  A lot of modern books have a coating on the casewrap so it is protected in some way.
  • Book Block - The main text of the book.
  • Gutter - The space/margin in a book between the words and the binding.
  • Headband - The decorated piece of fabric used at the top and bottom of a book to fill the gap between the spine and the cover.  Haven’t you always wondered what that was called?
  • Backbone - Another word for the spine of the book.  This is a term that they want even kinder students to know now!!
The site also introduced additional vocabulary, such as mock-up, format, proof, saddle stitch and F&G!

I have a feeling that many students do not know the true terms for the parts of a book.  It would be neat to share this information with my students and have them create different technology presentations on apps such as Padlet or Prezi to showcase this vocabulary with books we have in the library.
